Can sleeping well help control hunger during weight loss? Celebrity dietician explains
New Delhi:

Sleep is often treated as the thing that gets squeezed out when weight loss becomes the priority. Food gets tracked, workouts get planned and calories become the focus, while sleep is left somewhere at the bottom of the list. But according to celebrity dietician and wellness coach Simrat Kathuria, that may be overlooking an important part of the weight management equation.

Good-quality sleep is not a magic fix for losing weight quickly, but it can make healthy eating and weight management easier. Kathuria points to the connection between sleep, appetite and food intake, explaining how consistently getting enough rest may help people manage hunger, cravings and portion sizes more effectively.

How sleep affects appetite and hunger

One of the most important links between sleep and weight management is appetite. Kathuria explains that being hungrier, or simply feeling more hungry than usual, can make it harder to manage portions and cravings. Research has also found associations between shorter sleep and changes in appetite-related hormones such as ghrelin and leptin.

"Getting the proper amount of sleep can help you consume less food," Kathuria says, pointing to findings from a randomised clinical trial involving adults who were overweight and typically slept for less than 6.5 hours a night.

In the study, participants who extended their sleep by around 1.2 hours each night consumed approximately 270 fewer calories per day. The additional sleep did not lead to a significant difference in energy expenditure, but those in the sleep-extension group did lose slightly more weight during the study period.

The point, then, is not that sleeping more suddenly burns a large number of calories. Rather, adequate sleep may influence how much people eat, which can matter when trying to maintain a calorie deficit.

Poor sleep may increase cravings and food intake

Sleep deprivation can also change the way food appeals to us. Kathuria notes that high-calorie and carbohydrate-rich foods may appear more "attractive" when someone has not slept well.

Fatigue can make it harder to regulate hunger and appetite, potentially resulting in more snacking or larger portions. A systematic review of 50 randomised controlled trials found that sleep restriction was generally associated with higher energy intake, as well as increased appetite, hunger, eating occasions and portion sizes.

That makes sleep particularly relevant for people trying to lose weight. Even if someone is eating well and exercising regularly, consistently poor sleep may make it harder to stick to those habits when hunger and cravings become more difficult to manage.

The role of sleep in weight loss

For people working towards weight loss, Kathuria recommends treating sleep as part of the overall strategy rather than an optional extra.

She suggests maintaining a regular sleep pattern and establishing a relaxing bedtime routine. She also advises against routinely "torturing yourself with short naps", highlighting the importance of getting proper, consistent rest.

The larger takeaway is fairly straightforward. "Sleep isn't a quick weight loss programme," Kathuria says, but good sleep can support appetite control alongside healthy eating and weight management.

Once the body is adequately rested, maintaining the calorie deficit needed for weight loss and sticking with the lifestyle changes required to sustain it may become easier. Sleep, in other words, is not a replacement for nutrition or exercise, but it can be an important part of making those efforts more manageable.
