New Delhi:Getting a tattoo can be a very exciting experience. Most people spend several hours thinking about the perfect design. However, before considering the artistic aspect, there is one thing that deserves equal attention: the safety standards of the tattoo studio.
“Hygiene should be above all,” says Prem Negi, Tattoo Artist at Devil’z Tattooz. "A tattoo is not just about the artwork, it is a process where safety is as important as the final outcome. “No matter how great a design looks, it’s not worth it if the basics aren’t right,” he says.
Make sure the needles are new
The first thing you want to check is the sealed needle. “Clients should ensure that the needle is opened in their presence and also check the expiry date of the needle before the session begins,” says Prem Negi. When you go into a studio, watch how it's done. “Always use new needles, sealed and open them in front of you,” he says.
Observe the artist's hygiene
A professional tattoo artist will wear new disposable gloves throughout the entire tattoo session. “If the artist touches anything that isn’t sterile, they should change gloves before tattooing again,” Prem Negi says.
They might seem like small things, but they do a lot to prevent contamination.
A clean workstation matters
‘Tattoo machines, ink bottles and work surfaces should be disinfected and wrapped before every client,’ said Prem Negi.
He also emphasizes that new disposable ink caps should always be used to pour the ink into. Anything that is leftover should be tossed and never used again,” he explains.
Don't overlook skin preparation
Another important step is the proper preparation of the skin. Before tattooing the area should be shaved with a new disposable razor and cleaned thoroughly.
“This helps prevent irritation, infection and healing problems down the track,” says Prem Negi.
Ask about aftercare
“Leaving the studio doesn’t stop the tattoo process. The right after care is crucial for a tattoo to heal properly and look its best in the long run.
"A professional artist will always tell you how to care for your tattoo after the session," he says.
Trust your instincts
If it doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. “Clients should always feel comfortable asking questions about hygiene practices or equipment,” says Prem Negi. A professional tattoo artist will always respect your concerns. “Your skin deserves care, respect and professionalism every time,” he says.
Tattooing is permanent, so choosing a safe, hygienic studio is as important as choosing a design.
